The successful conclusion of the RISK 2010 conference
Last week at the convention center of Hotel Habakuk in Maribor, the biggest event in the field of computer security and new technologies for business operations assurance in the Adriatic region took place – the RISK 2010 conference.

The formal opening introduction was given by Mr. Sašo Papp, and was then followed by the speeches of the head of sales of REAL security, Mr. David Ivačič, and by the Deputy Mayor of the city of Maribor, Mr. Rok Peče.

The opening ceremony was also accompanied by the sound of academic drummers from the percussion ensemble 'Slovenski Tolkalni Projekt' (STOP), who with their strong drumming symbolically declared war to hackers.

This traditional conference, fifth in a row, was attended this year by slightly less than 450 participants from the region in two days, and  the event was supported by 35 partners and sponsors, among others, the Municipality of Maribor, as honorary patron. In two days 26 speakers held lectures attended by an audience of leading Slovenian and international experts.

This time, the speakers at the international conference were  experts from the following  companies: GUIDANCE SOFTWARE, GARTNER SLOVENIA, SAFENET, ALADDIN, TREND MICRO, IBM, WEBSENSE, ARCSIGHT, INFOVISTA, CISCO, DIGINEO, STONESOFT, BMC, QUALIS, BLANCCO, NUCLEO, MCAFFE, SOURCEFIRE, ZSCALER, REA IT, MIŠKA, SNT Slovenia, ASTEC, SPEM GROUP, Belgrade  MATHEMATICAL INSTITUT and REAL SECURITY.

The presence of global leading companies from each segment of the relevant areas enabled participants to expand the horizons regarding new solutions, products and tactics for protection against everyday threats.

New technologies were presented, such as SaaS (Security as a Service), solutions in the cloud (cloud computing), green computing, etc., as well as a regulatory system which require end users to comply with instructions manual and observe standards such as PCI SSC, Basel II, SOX, GLBA, HIPAA, SB1386, FISMA, FFIE. The main point of the conference, as always, remains the protection of what is considered of utmost importance for companies and individuals, i.e data, and the technologies that are used for that purpose.

Slovenian and international experts have lectured on a number of new and upcoming technologies that in the coming months and years will create the image of information security. Numerous technological innovations and their application in practice were presented. Parts of the lectures were devoted to  various business issues as well as issues concerning development of additional skills, such as how to react in crisis situations, intelligent tools for planning and delivering quality service for the transmission of data and techniques to lower costs of IT technologies.

"To be honest, we have to admit that we are surprised with the success of the RISK 2010 Conference, since due to recession and reduced budgets for study trips and visits to conferences, truthfully speaking, we did not expect so many participants. Never before have we had so many applications, and had there been less snow blizzards, we could easily have had more then 500 visitors in two days, which by our standards is considered outstanding.
Unfortunately, because of poor weather and traffic conditions, not all those who were willing to come could make it, and some that did, needed to travel more then two and a half hours from Ljubljana or Zagreb, so we had to post pone  the official start of the conference for an hour. Based on the first reactions, I think the audience was satisfied and the otherwise busy schedule allowed many people to have a broader view of the extremely important topic of data protection.

As is our custom, we also organized social – informal part of the conference for all our participants, we took our guests to Maribor Pohorje with new gondola lift, and offered them Pohorje dishes and cooked wine. For our guests from neighboring countries, as well as guests from former Republic of Yugoslavia, we arranged a surprise visit from Novi Sad’s Tamburaši and at the height of fun for a little laughter local musician, who has shown how to yodel. The highlight of the evening was competition in yodeling, where we could easily spot true talents among contestants who, of course, were rewarded accordingly. Finally, we believe that once again we have succeeded in combining technology and human relationships, especially because we believe that trust and good relationship between the people is the foundation of any long and successful partnership. " said Renato Uhl the Director of REAL security d.o.o., who is also the official organizer of the conference RISK 2010.
